Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. |
Starting A MeetingMeetings Are Run By GroupsThe first step in establishing an online AA meeting is getting your group together. There is a forum on the AA Online forum system called 'Starting A Group' which is designed to give you a way of making contact with other members who are also interested in starting an online meeting. Note that the 'Starting A Group' forum is for members only so it cannot be seen by casual visitors to the website and forum system. It can only be seen and used by registered forum members when they are logged in to the forums.Another mechanism that can be used to help you make contact with other members is the 'Get In Touch' database. This is a bit like a noticeboard where you can post a message which can be seen by anyone visiting the website instead of just by registered forum users. AA has some sound advice about setting up new groups contained in the pamphlet 'The AA Group... Where it all begins.' If you haven't read this you can get a copy in PDF format from the AA World Services website by using this link... There is also more specific information about starting a meeting-by-email in a little pamphlet called 'Getting Started in Online AA' produced by the Online Intergroup of Alcoholics Anonymous. This is also available in PDF format and you can get it by using this link... Getting Down To DetailThe founder members of your new group will have a lot to talk about: what kind of meeting? what kind of meeting format? who will do what? and so on. Although you can conduct this sort of discussion by private email, you might want to ask for a mechanism to do that. You can have a private mailing list for these group conscience/business discussions, a private forum, or a private chatroom. Just ask. (Use the form below.)On Your Own?AA history is littered with stories of individual members keeping meetings open on their own. You may have been unable to find other members to help you start a meeting but want to go ahead and open the doors anyway. AA Online is not here to make that difficult if you believe it is the right thing to do. So go ahead and ask for the facilities you need to get you started. |
